You must have always seen powerful characters like Superman, Spiderman or Batman saving the world on television or mobile screens. These heroes of cinema have imaginary powers, but did you know that there is a ‘Real Life Hero’ living in our Gujarat’s capital Gandhinagar, who does not have any superpowers, yet he is doing the heroic work of saving an entire species?
Yes, you read that right! We are talking about Samirbhai Rami, known as the “Sparrow Man” of Gandhinagar.
While the sweet chirping of sparrows is being lost in the modern concrete jungles and radiation from mobile towers, Samirbhai has taken the initiative to bring these little birds back to our backyards through his ‘Happy Sparrow Home’ campaign. On the occasion of ‘World Sparrow Day’ on March 20, it is truly inspiring to know about the unique journey of this true protector of nature.
*Journey from childhood memories to ‘Sparrow Man’*
Samirbhai Rami, the inspirer of Happy Health Club,’s attachment to nature and the inimitable birds is not something new. Samirbhai, who grew up watching the dusty roads of the village and the nests of sparrows on the roofs of houses, felt heartbroken when he saw the dwindling number of sparrows amidst urbanization. From this same feeling, a small initiative was born in the year 2016, which has become a banyan tree today. When he started, about 15 volunteers were associated with him and today the number has reached 70.
The specialty of Happy Chakli Ghar is that it is a specially designed nest, different from the usual nest, with a strong construction and a secure entrance.
Samirbhai has already done an innovative experiment in environmental conservation by distributing more than 6,000 and 10,000 chickadees in the year 2024 and 2025. While this year he has prepared about 12,000 chickadees.
Apart from this, to inspire the new generation, he also goes to schools and trains children to make chickadees from waste, best from waste, and from useless boxes.
Samirbhai says, “The sparrow is not extinct but it has just moved away from us. The sparrow is all around us, if we install a sparrow house properly and arrange for it to have food and water nearby, the sparrow will definitely come.”
He is not only a sparrow house, but also a pioneer in social activities like tree plantation, bird rescue, blood donation, arrangement of water tanks for birds and addiction treatment.
