57-year-old Mukeshbhai (name changed) from Vadodara city was having difficulty urinating for a long time. We are all aware of the side effects of not getting rid of urine properly and on time. Apart from that, he has to go to pass urine frequently, gets up several times during the day but also at night for minor doubts, and the pain while passing urine became unbearable over time. So he had been seeing senior urologist Dr. Haresh Thummar for his urination problem for about four years. But despite taking medicine, the problem increased in the last two months. Dr. Haresh Thummar diagnosed him with Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) (non-cancerous prostatic) based on a complete examination of the patient’s problem and reports. This disease usually causes the prostate gland to enlarge, causing difficulty in urinating. This problem increases in many men as they age.
Dr. Haresh Thummar first explained about the traditional endoscopic prostate surgeries like transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) and laser surgery for the treatment of BPH; but both of these procedures had a higher risk of sexual problems like retrograde ejaculation or anejaculation. It was equally important for the patient to maintain sexual function along with prostate treatment.
Keeping these concerns in mind, Dr. Haresh Thummar suggested the Urolift procedure; which is a minimally invasive technique. In this procedure, special clips are inserted into the prostate gland; which keep the enlarged tissue away from the urethra. So that the obstructions in the flow of urine are removed and the flow of urine improves. Mukeshbhai underwent a urolift procedure. A few days after the surgery, a uroflowmetry test to measure the flow and volume of his urine revealed that the urine rate had increased from 9 ml/sec to 20.7 ml/sec. Mukeshbhai has returned to his normal lifestyle with the unprecedented and satisfactory results of the urolift procedure.
Dr. Haresh Thummar says in this context, “If BPH is not treated properly, it can cause permanent damage to the bladder. In some cases, the condition becomes so bad that the patient may need catheterization. Due to constant difficulty in urination, it has a great impact on the quality of life of the patient. Therefore, whenever such a problem occurs, it is very important to get it treated by a specialist doctor without delay.” The Urolift procedure, first performed by Dr. Haresh Thummar at Zydus Hospital, Vadodara, is very effective for selected prostate patients.
Dr. Haresh Thummar has completed a fellowship in Advanced Endo Urology from New York, USA. He is the only Endoneurologist doctor trained in Endoneurology Fellowship in Vadodara. He has more than 20 years of experience with more than 18000 surgeries.
Mukeshbhai and countless patients like him, thank the Zydus team and the entire medical staff for their treatment.
